Seamless patient transfers: Training for healthcare professionals in IABP support

This live, 90 minute web seminar is designed for health care professionals who are directly responsible for the transfer or receiving of a patient from one facility to another that is requiring intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support. The program will include a review of the theory of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABC) therapy, followed by a discussion of the technical aspects of the Getinge IABP and the IAB catheter. Troubleshooting the alarms and advisories in the transport setting will also be discussed.

Outline:

  • Theoretical aspects of counterpulsation
  • Clinical considerations during the transport or receiving of a transfer patient from another facility
  • Troubleshooting in the transport setting

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this program, you will be able to:

  • Describe the two physiological effects achieved by the mechanics of inflation and deflation of the IAB as it relates to the cardiac cycle illustrated by an augmented arterial pressure waveform and it’s impact on Blood pressure readings
  • Transport considerations for the management of the patient
  • Transport considerations of the pump during transport including : removal from the cart, battery run times and He tank

The following modules are required pre-requisites and need to be completed prior to attending this training:  

*complete the IABP eLearning module that corresponds to the IABP model used at your hospital/facility.
