Leading Innovation in Thoracic Drainage

Scott Oldeman, Senior Engineering Manager, Product, has dedicated his entire 14-year professional career to Getinge, playing a pivotal role in the development and advancement of life-saving medical devices. Based in Merrimack, NH, Scott’s journey with Getinge is a testament to perseverance, growth, and dedication to making a difference.

Scott joined Getinge in 2010 as an Engineering Technician at the Merrimack site when it was originally located in Hudson, NH. Initially applying for an Associate Engineer role, he didn’t get the position. But the hiring team saw potential and offered him a temporary role instead—a decision that launched a remarkable career. Over the years, Scott advanced through roles of increasing responsibility within Research and Development (R&D), including Senior Product Development Engineer, Principal Product Engineer, and Engineering Manager. Today, as Senior Engineering Manager, he leads a team focused on the next generation thoracic drainage devices. This includes overseeing design changes and updates, to ensure the safety and efficacy of the devices.

Reflecting on his journey, Scott says, “Never in a million years did I think I’d be where I am now when I was initially told ‘no.’ Perseverance and a willingness to embrace opportunities have made all the difference.”

Scott credits Getinge’s collaborative culture as a key factor in his success. “Getinge’s cross-functional approach means every department works together to find solutions. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that’s always focused on delivering quality with the patient in mind.”

Scott’s work extends across borders, collaborating with colleagues in Solna, Sweden, and beyond, to solve complex challenges. “Exchanging knowledge globally allows us to continually improve and innovate,” he explains.

For Scott, the most rewarding part of his role is knowing the products he works on save lives. “The decisions we make daily ensure our devices meet the highest standards and can continue to make a difference for patients around the world.”

Equally important to Scott is mentoring the next generation of engineers. “Helping new talent grow and succeed is incredibly fulfilling. Watching someone I’ve mentored advance in their career is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.”

Outside of work, Scott’s passions include pop culture and the Marvel Universe. A lifelong comic book collector, he’s met many Marvel Cinematic Universe actors and even Stan Lee, the legendary creator of his favorite superheroes. Scott also studies Japanese and hopes to visit Getinge’s Tokyo Experience Center to test his language skills.

Scott encourages new hires to stay curious and embrace every opportunity. “Ask questions, learn about our products, and understand their history and design. Take advantage of every chance to grow—it’s amazing where perseverance and a positive attitude can take you.”

Scott’s story is one of determination, growth, and an unwavering commitment to improving lives through innovation. At Getinge, his journey continues to inspire those around him.
